LO SGUARDO ASSORDANTE

Le webcams live sono delle finestre on-line che mostrano video raccolti in tempo reale da tutto il mondo, come delle specie di camere di sorveglianza accessibili a tutti. Partendo dall'osservazione del materiale prodotto da questi dispositivi ambigui, Antonio Di Biase analizza il legame fra i sistemi di controllo e le nuove frontiere dell'estetica visuale. Attraverso un'indagine della storia sociale del mezzo, grazie agli studi di Michel Foucault, Byung-Chul Han, David Lyon, James Bridley e di molti altri autori che hanno fatto della sorveglianza il loro campo d'indagine privilegiato, il testo prova a decostruire il linguaggio dei nuovi media e a proporne una visione lucida, fra funzioni e limiti percettivi.

The “live webcams” are online windows that show videos collected in real time from all over the world, as a surveillance cameras accessible to all. Starting from the observation of the material produced by these ambiguous devices, Antonio Di Biase analyzes the link between control systems and the new frontiers of visual aesthetics. Through an investigation of the social history of the medium, thanks to the studies of Michel Foucault, Byung-Chul Han, David Lyon, James Bridley and many other authors who have made surveillance their privileged field of investigation, the text tries to deconstruct the language of new media and to propose a clear vision, between functions and perceptive limits.

“The Deafening Look” is the theoretical documentation of the investigation into the aesthetics of video surveillance, following the short film review “That Look from Above”, and which anticipates the release of the film “un/Hook”.
